Are you wondering why you need to age your cigars? Maybe you didn’t even know it was something to consider. The most common way to age a cigar is in a humidor. But you could use something as simple as a freezer bag as a rudimentary way of getting results. There are other choices as well, but which way you choose is up to you.

It is possible to smoke and enjoy a cigar without aging it. Much like wine, there are those who are satisfied to drink a basic California wine, while others want the most exquisitely aged wine money can buy. It is the same with a cigar.

Typically you will find that quality cigars will be aged at least 2 years. If you purchased higher end cigars then those will very often come aged 3 years. It is possible that you get a top end cigar that comes aged ten years, but these are unusual and rare.

In the past, it was more common to have cigar makers age them. But they are in such demand these days, that typically the manufacturers sell them as soon as they come off the tables. Sometimes the distributors will do the aging, but other times it is up to the end user.

Cigars that are completely green, meaning that they have had no aging from the manufacturer, will need to go through a process of aging for at least a couple of weeks, up to a full month. If this fails to take place it is likely the smoking experience will be unpleasant.

When the cigars go through their initial aging process, the flavor is infused throughout the cigar more evenly. While a month is a minimum, you will likely want to age them much longer.

The next question you might have is, just how long is long enough. The answer is a hot debate among many. When it comes to aging your cigars using a humidor, you will inevitably need to know if you should leave the cigar in its wrapper or not. The blending of oils along with oxidation and other chemical reactions are the process of aging cigars.

The wrapper will not be sealed. Doing so would prevent the natural oxidation and so on from occurring. So you may wonder if you should leave it on. It is debatable, but it is advisable to leave it on. The wrapper helps to keep mold and bugs from getting to the tobacco.
